“Is it a great place to work?” As a recruiter I am often asked this question. While role, responsibilities and remuneration are a huge consideration for someone looking for a new position, company culture, how you are valued, and non-financial benefits are considered almost as important.
We all have different motivators. While a pool table and Friday drinks might do it for some candidates, others will want more. Financial remuneration is always going to be high on the list, non-financial benefits are becoming more attractive to employees. According to a survey conducted by Seek, 84% of the 4,800 workers interviewed, were most attracted to a combination of flexible work arrangements and professional development.
So what factors contribute to a “great place to work”? Here are the three that I often find myself discussing with candidates.
British Telecom is currently a leader in flexible working arrangements. They identified that flexible work was considered a huge non-financial benefit and essential to attracting and retaining talented employees. Almost 90% of their UK employees have flexible work arrangements in some capacity.
Without a doubt, eBay is one of the hottest tech companies to work for. They have created a strong and fun work culture and offer a huge amount of additional benefits for their employees, some of the more creative perks are onsite dry cleaning, massages, auto detailing, haircuts and dental cleaning. They even have an adoption assistance program and offer pet insurance for employees.
In addition to providing benefits, Ebay want to be a great employer for women. They are committed to supporting their female leaders though a Women’s Initiative Network (WIN), which brings women together from across the country to connect, and hear from other inspiring female leaders, such as Hillary Clinton. They are also working to improve the retention rates of women through programs to enable them to develop lasting careers.
Great office spaces
A Foosball table and a drinks fridge were once considered to be the epitome of a ‘cool’ workplace, but many organisations have gone beyond this. Companies like Lego are using their product to infuse fun and creativity into the workplace. Each team area is signposted with a huge Lego design, and the offices are decorated with Lego murals. Employees are encouraged to use the colourful bricks in brainstorming sessions to bring play and creativity into problem-solving.
Gyms, bars and chill out rooms are also becoming common place in workplaces around Australia. Companies are designing workspaces to create positive and collaborative environments, making employees feel comfortable and happy. Workspaces are a great way to promote a positive company culture, the happier employees are to be at work the more likely they are to be productive and inspired.
When an organisation and leaders adopt a human centred focus, valuing the individual, it creates a culture of trust, respect and compassion. Workplaces that can do this and understand the value of their intangible assets are often the best places to work.
