What makes a good video interview?

Video interviews are a great way for employers to interact with candidates and potential employees when circumstances don’t allow for face-to-face meetings.

While remote interviews can present some challenges (usually of the technical kind), they also have many benefits - for example, there is no need to reimburse travel costs. They also allow you to interview candidates who may be living further afield and are looking to relocate to your area.

Here are our top three tips on conducting video interviews:

1. Technology is key

The main obstacle to a smooth-running video interview will be inadequate tech. Make sure you have a stable internet connection, as well as a working, high-quality camera and microphone. If your video freezes every ten seconds, or if the call suddenly drops, you can be sure that the candidate will be put off - and there’s nothing worse than missing out on an amazing candidate because of technical issues.

Before the interview, make sure all your equipment is working - we advise using a laptop or desktop computer over a phone or tablet, as they have better capabilities and connection. And remember to do a test call beforehand to check the volume of your microphone!

2. The right environment

Just because you won’t be in the same room as the candidate doesn’t mean your environment is irrelevant. Not only will the candidate be able to see what is behind you, you also need to make sure you’re free of any distractions that could jeopardise the interview. Depending on your office’s size and capacity, this might mean conducting the interview in a meeting room, or simply asking your colleagues to be quiet for a little while.

If you can, pick a silent, well-lit room, and make sure you pay attention to your background. The candidate will be judging your business from what they can see, so get rid of any items that could make your office look messy, and create an appealing backdrop - maybe with some branded items in the background to give an immediate idea of your company’s identity. And this goes without saying, but pay attention to what you’re wearing.

3. Body-less language

During a video interview, the candidate will only be able to see your face and shoulders - which means you can’t rely on body language to create a positive, relaxed impression. Instead, you’ll need to use the tone and speed of your voice to reassure nervous candidates. So make sure to speak slowly and clearly, sit still, and don’t forget to smile!

A well-conducted video interview can be just as effective as a meeting in person, so don’t overthink it and act just as you would in a “normal” one.
